My E drive hides and I can't find it

I put an install cd into the E drive, my CD/DVD drive. Nothing happens, so I check file explorer and my PC. Both show the c drive only. Occasionally the e drive shows but rarely. Today it did and I began to install my printer. After five minutes everything froze. A few minutes later it said the machine was having a problem and it would reboot. After that the e drive never showed up. I opened it up and removed the disk then closed it. Put it back but it couldn't see the drive. How do I install the printer from a hidden drive? I've had this two weeks and hate to send it for repairs, so am hoping one of y'all know a trick to making it show up and read my disc. I e never had a machine occasionally find a drive. If it doesn't then it'd been installed wrong.
